Did you know that although the Treaty was signed in 1840 it took another 94 years until it was first officially commemorated in 1934? It has been a public holiday since 1974. The treaty was signed between representatives of the British Crown and over 500 Maori chiefs. It is significant that no members of the Tuhoe tribe (iwi) signed the Treaty!
